You’ll find complete skates as well as individual components like boots and blades in our webshop.

Short track vs. long track skates: what's the difference?

The main difference between short track and long track skates is the boot height. Short track skates are built higher to provide additional ankle support, due to the tighter curves and higher pressure in short track skating. Unlike long track races held on a 400-meter oval, short track skating takes place on a 111.11-meter rink, which means sharper turns and more explosive movements.

Buying the best short track skates

At Waterman Sport, we understand that every skater has their own preferences. That’s why we offer a wide selection of short track skates: so you can find a pair that fits your style, goals, and level.

Short track skates consist of two main components: the blade and the boot. Both sold separately in our webshop.

  • Short Track Blades: Also known as short track tubes, these are specially designed for high-speed cornering and tight turns. Compared to long track blades, short track blades are optimized for maximum control and stability, allowing for powerful sprints and fast transitions. Popular models include the EHS Alpha PM Prebent and the Viking Matrix Shorttrack.
  • Short Track Boots: Short track boots are higher and stiffer than long track boots. This provides critical ankle support during tight, forceful turns. Unlike long track skates, these boots do not use a clap mechanism. For example, our lightweight EHS short track boot offers great support for advanced skating.

Boots and blades are mounted using precision screws and alignment points, creating a secure bond that ensures maximum power transfer.

What to look for when buying short track skates

To make the right choice, consider the following key factors:

  • Fit: A proper fit is essential. Ill-fitting skates can lead to poor performance and injuries. Not sure what size you need? Contact our experts! We're happy to help.
  • Stiffness: The stiffness of the boot affects how well energy is transferred during sprints and tight corners. Competition-level boots are generally stiffer than recreational ones and offer more control.
  • Blades: Look for high-quality stainless steel blades. They offer better grip, smoother gliding, and a longer lifespan.
